Piano

The piano is one of the most popular instruments to learn. The simple layout makes it very accessible and easy to navigate as a beginner, and its wide range and versatility lend it to all styles of music, from classical to jazz.

FAQs

Do I need my own instrument to learn piano?

If you have a keyboard or piano at home you will learn more quickly than if you only play at your lesson. However, you may wish to try a few lessons before committing to the expense. We use Yamaha Clavinovas at Windows Music Academy, but there are various options available from compact keyboards and digital pianos to second-hand or new acoustic pianos. You can discuss options with your teacher and with staff at JG Windows.

What are the age limits on playing piano?

We would recommend the lowest age for learning piano is 6 years old, although it does depend on the student. We’d recommend a taster lesson with one of our piano teachers for younger learners.

Do you need any previous musical experience to learn?

Absolutely no experience is required! Complete beginners are welcome.

Will I learn to read music?

You can learn to read music as part of the process, but you can also learn to play by ear if you prefer.

Yes, learning to read music is part of the process.

Are the lessons for keyboard or piano?

Either! Most things you will learn on piano can be translated to between piano and keyboard, although there are different styles of playing which might suit you. If you aren’t sure, you may want to discuss this with us and try a taster lesson.

Who is the teacher?

Our piano teachers are Maria Patereli and Julija Jacenaite. Learn more about them here.

What equipment do you need to learn piano?

Apart from our piano or keyboard at home and stool to sit on, you don’t need any special equipment.

What other regular costs are there with learning piano?

If you have an acoustic piano, you will need to pay a tuner to visit your house about once a year at a cost of approximately _________. However, a digital piano or keyboard requires no extra maintenance. You may wish to buy printed music so you can play your favourite music.

Do you offer exams and will I have to take them?

Our teachers can put you through exams should you wish to take that direction. However, there is absolutely no obligations. You will learn at your own pace and your teacher will cater their teaching to your needs and requirements. If you would like to take this direction, we offer ABRSM and Trinity College exams.

How much practice do I need to do?

Fitting practice into your already busy routine can seem like an impossible challenge! However, practicing little and often is better than no practice at all, so even a regular 10 minutes will make a more of a difference than one hour-long session.

Are the lessons available online?
