Man Playing Saxophone

Saxophone

FAQs

Do I need my own instrument to learn saxophone?

If you have a saxophone at home you will learn more quickly than if you only play at your lesson. However, you may wish to try a few lessons before committing to the expense.

What are the age limits on playing saxophone?

Younger children may be limited by their size as a full-size saxophone is one of the larger instruments, so the minimum starting age is about 8 years old. However, a smaller instrument is available which makes playing easier for younger beginners. We would recommend speaking to a member of JG Windows staff before booking a first lesson for a child to check if they are able to comfortably hold the instrument. There is no upper age limit!

Do you need any previous musical experience to learn?

Absolutely no experience is required! Complete beginners are welcome.

Will I learn to read music?

You can learn to read music as part of the process, but you can also learn to play by ear if you prefer.

Are the lessons only for alto saxophone?

No, we also teach tenor, soprano and baritone saxophone. Alto sax is the most commonly learnt, due to the price, availability and playability of the instrument, but you can start on any saxophone.

What styles of music do you teach?

We can teach any style from classical to jazz, including improvisation.

Who is the teacher?

Our woodwind teacher is Thomas Dixon. Learn more about him here.

What equipment do you need to learn saxophone?

As well as the saxophone, you will need a strap, a cleaner, cork grease and reeds for the mouthpiece. A music stand to hold your music sheets and books can be very useful, and so is a stand to rest your saxophone on while you aren’t playing it, but neither are essential.

What other regular costs are there with learning saxophone?

You will need to replace your saxophone reeds every so often, depending on how often you play. You may also wish to consider an annual service on your instrument. However, if you look after your instrument, clean it after each use and store it properly, you shouldn’t have many issues.

Do you offer exams and will I have to take them?

Our teachers can put you through exams should you wish to take that direction. However, there is absolutely no obligations. You will learn at your own pace and your teacher will cater their teaching to your needs and requirements. If you would like to take this direction, we offer ABRSM and Trinity College exams.

How much practice do I need to do?

Fitting practice into your already busy routine can seem like an impossible challenge! However, practicing little and often is better than no practice at all, so even a regular 10 minutes will make a more of a difference than one hour-long session.

Are the lessons available online?

Yes, all of our tuition is available online if you aren't able or would prefer not to travel to the shop. Click here to learn more about online lessons.
